99% of the crimes committed during Guatemala's war have not been brought to justice. Of over 45,000 forced disappearances, only one case has gone to trial. Send an email to support war survivors' right to truth and justice today.
 Did You Know?

> Attacks against human rights defenders in Guatemala have doubled over the last five years. NISGUA's teams of on-the-ground international human rights monitors work to deter violence in communities, courtrooms and at public events.

 > Former dictator Efrain Rios Montt, who ruled during the bloodiest period of the war, currently holds a seat in the Guatemalan Congress. He is wanted for genocide and crimes against humanity.

The Xalalá hydro-electric dam is rejected by 90% of the local population because it would displace thousands of indigenous people and damage farmlands and forests.

Almost 400 mining concessions have been granted to transnational gold, silver, nickel, and zinc companies in Guatemala, posing severe threats to rural communities' social and environmental well-being.

JOIN NISGUA'S CAMPAIGN TO SUPPORT

INDIGENOUS RIGHTS IN GUATEMALA

Communities across Guatemala have used referendums to voice their opposition to natural resource extraction and mega-projects that threaten their livelihoods and rights as indigenous peoples.  Urge the Guatemalan government to respect community referendums and uphold indigenous peoples’ rights to self-determination and grassroots democracy.

2. SAY NO TO CAFTA!!!

Stopping CAFTA will change the debate on trade in this country.
It will signify a growing grassroots movement demanding a re-evaluation of the way trade agreements are negotiated and the neoliberal policies behind them. More importantly, a strong citizens' response now will help check big businesses’ influence.

So call or write your congressperson now.
Tell your representative that, as a constituent, you are urging him/her to reject CAFTA, and be sure to make clear this is a decisive issue that you will remember during the next elections. Call 1-800-839-5276 to reach the congressional switchboard, or download a sample letter to express your concerns and demand an official written response on this issue.

Contact the media about CAFTA.
Even local media helps draw the attention of key policymakers. Learn how you can most effectively reach the media on this issue. Ask why they’re not covering such an important topic, or try to get your own piece into a local or regional paper.

Organize a town or city council resolution.
Learn how to organize a resolution, and join cities around the country in opposing CAFTA. Educate your local representatives about how CAFTA will severely limit their ability to utilize public contracts to support important social, environmental, and equitable goals, if their state governor has agreed to the accord. Visit Public Citizen to see whether your governor has signed on to this corporate agreement: www.citizen.org/trade/subfederal/states/
