Take Action!

2007 has begun with a series of alarming attacks against Guatemalan human rights organizations. Send an email to the Guatemalan government today. more >>>
Did You Know?

> Guatemala has the most unequal land distribution in the Western Hemisphere, with large landholders who comprise only 2% of the population possessing 70% of the productive lands.

> Attacks against human rights defenders in Guatemala increased between 2004 and 2005. In 2005, El Movimiento Nacional por los Derechos Humanos documented 224 attacks against human rights defenders, in comparison with 122 attacks in 2004.

> On March 30, 2006, the 11th anniversary of the signing of the indigenous accord, tens of thousands of workers, farmers and indigenous people marched in Guatemala City to demand the strengthening of indigenous rights, restriction of open pit mining licenses, and funds for the Ministry of Agriculture to purchase land for redistribution.

Wish List
............................................................................................

NISGUA is always looking for various items to make our Bay Area (California) and Guatemala City offices more efficient and user-friendly, so please check here regularly for updates about our current needs.

NISGUA is always on the lookout for:

1. Airline miles – we can always use miles. Donated miles help defray the transportation costs we incur helping Guatemalans come to the U.S. to testify in human rights cases before the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights or for emergency purposes. We also regularly need donated miles to support our national fall speaking tour of Guatemalan social justice advocates. And mileage also helps us carry out other important program activities, such as trainings for prospective human rights accompaniers, etc.

2. New PC computers

3. Free, expert technical services and advice from:

a. professional translators
b. development, including planned giving, experts
c. computer experts
d. attorneys
e. insurance brokers
f. stock brokers

4. Volunteers in the Bay Area who can come in once every few weeks, like pizza, and can help us with fun office “grunt” work

NISGUA is currently looking for:

1. New office copy machine designed to handle serious copying needs

(If you think you have something we could use that does not appear on this list, please contact us (organizer[AT]nisgua.org510-238-8400) before taking further action, so we can discuss shipping and whether we do, in fact, need the item. We appreciate your consideration of this request as unsolicited donations can cause NISGUA expense and loss of staff time.)
