99% of the crimes committed during Guatemala's war have not been brought to justice. Of over 45,000 forced disappearances, only one case has gone to trial. Send an email to support war survivors' right to truth and justice today.
 Did You Know?

> Attacks against human rights defenders in Guatemala have doubled over the last five years. NISGUA's teams of on-the-ground international human rights monitors work to deter violence in communities, courtrooms and at public events.

 > Former dictator Efrain Rios Montt, who ruled during the bloodiest period of the war, currently holds a seat in the Guatemalan Congress. He is wanted for genocide and crimes against humanity.

>
The Xalalá hydro-electric dam is rejected by 90% of the local population because it would displace thousands of indigenous people and damage farmlands and forests.

Almost 400 mining concessions have been granted to transnational gold, silver, nickel, and zinc companies in Guatemala, posing severe threats to rural communities' social and environmental well-being.

Wish List
............................................................................................

NISGUA is always looking for various items to make our Bay Area (California) and Guatemala City offices more efficient and user-friendly, so please check here regularly for updates about our current needs.

NISGUA is always on the lookout for:

1. Airline miles – we can always use miles. Donated miles help defray the transportation costs we incur helping Guatemalans come to the U.S. to testify in human rights cases before the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights or for emergency purposes. We also regularly need donated miles to support our national fall speaking tour of Guatemalan social justice advocates. And mileage also helps us carry out other important program activities, such as trainings for prospective human rights accompaniers, etc.

2. New PC computers

3. Free, expert technical services and advice from:

a. professional translators
b. development, including planned giving, experts
c. computer experts
d. attorneys
e. insurance brokers
f. stock brokers

4. Volunteers in the Bay Area who can come in once every few weeks, like pizza, and can help us with fun office “grunt” work

NISGUA is currently looking for:

1. New office copy machine designed to handle serious copying needs

2. Scanner for the Guatemala City office

(If you think you have something we could use that does not appear on this list, please contact us (organizer[AT]nisgua.org510-238-8400) before taking further action, so we can discuss shipping and whether we do, in fact, need the item. We appreciate your consideration of this request as unsolicited donations can cause NISGUA expense and loss of staff time.)
