> Attacks against human rights defenders in Guatemala have doubled over the last five years. NISGUA's teams of on-the-ground international human rights monitors work to deter violence in communities, courtrooms and at public events.

 > Former dictator Efrain Rios Montt, who ruled during the bloodiest period of the war, currently holds a seat in the Guatemalan Congress. He is wanted for genocide and crimes against humanity.

The Xalalá hydro-electric dam is rejected by 90% of the local population because it would displace thousands of indigenous people and damage farmlands and forests. 

Almost 400 mining concessions have been granted to transnational gold, silver, nickel, and zinc companies in Guatemala, posing severe threats to rural communities' social and environmental well-being.

2005 Tour: 500 Years of Resistance

Introduction

NISGUA regularly hosts Guatemalan activists who travel throughout the U.S. speaking to church, solidarity, law, women's, university and an array of other groups about grassroots work and the general situation in Guatemala. They discuss their work for democracy, human rights and socioeconomic justice, a task that in recent months has become much more dangerous.

Speaker & Organizational Bios

Guatemalan grassroots groups are represented on the speaking tour by a variety of dynamic speakers. The tours offer people in the U.S. a chance to learn about current events and expert analysis of pressing issues facing Guatemala, directly from speakers who are at the forefront of the struggle for justice and human rights.

Tour Actions

Each NISGUA speaking tour tends to be accompanied by a ‘tour action’ - a way that people coming to events can immediately respond and show their support for the struggle that the speaker represents. These actions are usually in the form of petitions or letters addressed to key Guatemalan, U.S. or international decision-makers. A successful tour can generate hundreds of such letters, which helps to amplify the positions that the speaker is spreading throughout the tour.
