Represent NISGUA at Events

Please be prepared to give an overview of NISGUA’s work and outline the goals and context of the Tour at the beginning of each presentation. You should also refer audiences to actions related to the presentations and ways to stay involved in NISGUA’s advocacy and human rights campaigns.
You may also be called upon to answer questions about NISGUA’s work or other ways to get involved. NISGUA will brainstorm and provide materials on these questions. Hosts can always refer interested people to our website or give out our brochures or contact information.

Spanish Translation

Provide Spanish to English Translation

In order to communicate to an English speaking audience, Spanish Translation/Interpretation must be provided, ideally by someone with prior Guatemala experience. Plan accordingly and have a backup translator in case of a last minute cancellation.
The local committee should arrange for an interpreter for all events unless we have specifically stated that interpretation will be provided by the NISGUA representative.

A few notes on interpretation:
The quality of interpreting services can make or break an event!

Ability to speak Spanish is not sufficient for someone to be an interpreter, so it would be good to start looking as soon as possible for experienced interpreters who are familiar with the issues to be discussed.
Once you have chosen an interpreter, please be sure to give our tips on interpretation and vocabulary to your interpreter(s) as soon as possible, well in advance of the event, as well as a brief summary of what the speaker will talk about.
Interpretation should be consecutive interpretation, which means the interpreter restates a few sentences in English after the speaker.
Interpretation should be as complete and accurate as possible, not just a general summary.
Even for informal events such as meals, interpretation is needed.

Fundraise

NISGUA asks that you commit to raising a target amount each day that a speaker is in your community. University honoraria, offerings from congregations, direct pitches at presentations, and silent auctions are all effective fundraising methods. Local dinners or selling calendars can also work.

The money raised on the Tour covers most of NISGUA’s Tour expenses and then is directed to the organizations that participated on the Tour. Local community fundraisers are a good way to raise money.
