> Attacks against human rights defenders in Guatemala have doubled over the last five years. NISGUA's teams of on-the-ground international human rights monitors work to deter violence in communities, courtrooms and at public events.

 > Former dictator Efrain Rios Montt, who ruled during the bloodiest period of the war, currently holds a seat in the Guatemalan Congress. He is wanted for genocide and crimes against humanity.    

>
The Xalalá hydro-electric dam is rejected by 90% of the local population because it would displace thousands of indigenous people and damage farmlands and forests. 

Almost 400 mining concessions have been granted to transnational gold, silver, nickel, and zinc companies in Guatemala, posing severe threats to rural communities' social and environmental well-being.

Introduction

Every year, NISGUA hosts Guatemalan activists who travel throughout the U.S. speaking about grassroots work and the general situation in Guatemala to a wide array of groups, including church, solidarity, law, women's, university and community groups. As Guatemalan organizers continue to struggle for justice in the face of the repression and criminalization of their work, creating spaces for international exchange is more important than ever.

NISGUA Tours for 2010 

The Spring 2010 tour, tentatively set for late February through March 2010, will be visiting the West Coast and parts of the Southwest.  The tour theme will be focused on mining and indigenous rights. Tour Host Responsibilities

Volunteering to organize a stop on the speaking tour can be exciting and fun. At the same time, it sometimes seems overwhelming and a lot of work. Here are some pointers from experienced tour hosts on how to prepare for a speaker’s visit. With some planning and consideration, tour events in your town can be successful and enjoyable for both you and the speaker.

Tour Advocacy and Media Successes

Our speaking tours aim to bring Guatemalan voices for justice and human rights to a larger audience. Media coverage of tour speakers helps their messages reach hundreds of thousands of people who might have missed tour events. Media work can also inspire local advocacy to advance justice in Guatemala and the U.S.

2009 NISGUA Tour

NISGUA invited the group Historical Memory, a grassroots organization from Nebaj in Guatemala's central highlands. The group reconstructs collective memory as a tool to address current issues, such as mega-“development” projects and the militarization of public security.

2008 NISGUA Tour

NISGUA hosted two activists who spoke about grassroots opposition to two mega-“development” schemes - the Xalala hydroelectric dam and open-pit mining - that have caused environmental and social damage.

Two Guatemalan activists spoke about efforts to hold former military officials accountable for genocide and crimes against humanity, and the ongoing struggle for economic justice in Guatemala.

Two Guatemalan activists pushed to hold Guatemala’s former military officials accountable for genocide and crimes against humanity, and stop the highly controversial Xalalá hydroelectric dam, which threatens to displace communities and disrupt the ecosystem, yet remains shrouded in secrecy.

2005 Tour: 500 Years of Resistance

Four Guatemalan civil society leaders traveled around the U.S. and Canada to share stories of resistance and struggle against oppression. The speakers addressed ending gender-based violence and the GLBT community in Guatemala, finding alternative economic models to CAFTA, indigenous resistance to mining, and the effects of migration on Guatemalan society.
