Did You Know?

> Guatemala has the most unequal land distribution in the Western Hemisphere, with large landholders who comprise only 2% of the population possessing 70% of the productive lands.

> Attacks against human rights defenders in Guatemala increased between 2004 and 2005. In 2005, El Movimiento Nacional por los Derechos Humanos documented 224 attacks against human rights defenders, in comparison with 122 attacks in 2004.

> On March 30, 2006, the 11th anniversary of the signing of the indigenous accord, tens of thousands of workers, farmers and indigenous people marched in Guatemala City to demand the strengthening of indigenous rights, restriction of open pit mining licenses, and funds for the Ministry of Agriculture to purchase land for redistribution.

NISGUA’s Guatemala Accompaniment Project (G.A.P.) participates in the global struggle to ensure the respect of human rights by placing volunteers side-by-side folks involved in precedent-setting legal cases and with organizations so as to create the space for Guatemalans to organize in defense of their own rights.

G.A.P. provides, when requested, international human rights accompaniers for Guatemalan communities, individuals, and grassroots organizations that work nonviolently to achieve social justice, respect for human rights, and peace.

Become a Human Rights Accompanier in Guatemala

Sound interesting? Become a human rights accompanier in Guatemala! Accompaniers act as human rights observers who provide a constant international presence to Guatemalan witnesses involved in precedent-setting legal cases. G.A.P. is always looking for qualified candidates to be accompaniers. Our next training in the U.S. will be held June 22-28, 2008; applications are accepted on a rolling basis.

Local Sponsoring Communities and Who We Accompany

Sponsoring Communities provide the resources and energy for ongoing accompaniment to be possible in Guatemala. Their long-term commitment to human rights, accompaniment and maintaining a relationship with a sister community in Guatemala is a key element to the sustainability of G.A.P. and the ten plus years of accompaniment we have been able to provide in Guatemala.

Accomplishments

Guatemala Accompaniment Project (G.A.P) staff has trained and placed more than 145 human rights monitors in returned refugee and internally displaced communities, with human rights organizations, and with genocide survivors since the project first began in 1995.
