Support NISGUA
 Take Action!
99% of the crimes committed during Guatemala's war have not been brought to justice. Of over 45,000 forced disappearances, only one case has gone to trial. Send an email to support war survivors' right to truth and justice today.
 Did You Know?

> Attacks against human rights defenders in Guatemala have doubled over the last five years. NISGUA's teams of on-the-ground international human rights monitors work to deter violence in communities, courtrooms and at public events.

 > Former dictator Efrain Rios Montt, who ruled during the bloodiest period of the war, currently holds a seat in the Guatemalan Congress. He is wanted for genocide and crimes against humanity.

>
The Xalalá hydro-electric dam is rejected by 90% of the local population because it would displace thousands of indigenous people and damage farmlands and forests.

Almost 400 mining concessions have been granted to transnational gold, silver, nickel, and zinc companies in Guatemala, posing severe threats to rural communities' social and environmental well-being.

Become a Grassroots Campaign Leader

referendum.jpgIn response to urgent needs in Guatemala, NISGUA is coordinating a letter campaign demanding that the Guatemalan government respect indigenous peoples' self-determination and grassroots democracy.

Please consider becoming a NISGUA GRASSROOTS CAMPAIGN LEADER and commit to obtaining 50, 100, or even more signatures to this important letter.
Read on (below) for tips on making this goal.  If you or your group is interested in committing, please contact Bridget@nisgua.org.

GRASSROOTS CAMPAIGN LEADER:
ACTION LIST

Considering becoming a Grassroots Campaign Leader for NISGUA? Read on for suggestions!  Already decided to take on this crucial role? Congratulations! We thank you for your support of indigenous rights and for your commitment to obtain 50+ signatures to the letter demanding respect for Guatemalan community referendums.

How will you get your signatures?

  • Send letter to contacts in an email, asking them to print the letter and send it to you.
  • Get help from friends!  If 5 people you know commit to getting 10 signatures, you’re there.  Of course, if 10 people you know get 20 signatures, you’ve taken it to another level!
  • Ask other groups you are involved with to support the action by sharing it with their members.
  • Approach organizations, groups and communities who work on connected issues about supporting the letter signing.  This could include groups interested in immigration, solidarity, environmental justice, indigenous rights, and globalization.
  • Bring copies of the letter with you in your daily life!  Seize opportunities to talk to the people around you about your interest in solidarity work and Guatemala.

Ready to do more?

  • Host a compelling photo exhibit on mining by photographer James Rodriguez. A collection of mounted photos with captions that illustrates the devastating impacts of mines on communities in Guatemala is available to be shipped to activists.  Offering an action for people to take at an event is an exciting opportunity to get people involved.  Shipping for the photo exhibit is $150.
  • Organize a speaking presentation.  Are you a former accompanier or is there one in your area?  Are there people from Central America in your community who have seen the impacts first-hand of destructive transnational companies?  Organize events for people to speak on current global issues and on crimes of the past and how lack of justice and accountability is connected to the crimes of today.
  • Connect with local media.  Get the word out on your letter campaign or any event you are organizing.  NISGUA is also happy to connect U.S./Guatemalan activists to radio stations for interviews.
  • Sell NISGUA’s Arte Maya Calendars.  Our unique calendars allow you to support social change while enjoying original works of art by indigenous Maya artists.
  • Promote the Guatemala Accompaniment Project.  One of the primary ways we are able to monitor these issues in Guatemala is through the presence of international observers.  Contact us for flyers!

Wherever you choose to take your work as a NISGUA Grassroots Campaign Leader, let us know!  Don’t hesitate to contact Bridget@NISGUA.org for
information, questions or support.  Thank you for your commitment and your work, in all that you do!
