The Xalalá hydro-electric dam is rejected by 90% of the local population because it would displace thousands of indigenous people and damage farmlands and forests. 

Almost 400 mining concessions have been granted to transnational gold, silver, nickel, and zinc companies in Guatemala, posing severe threats to rural communities' social and environmental well-being.

Guatemala-Based

Guatemala Program Coordinator for G.A.P.  

The Guatemala Program Coordinator for the Guatemala Accompaniment Project (G.A.P.) works with the U.S.-based G.A.P. Program Coordinator to train, orient, place, and provide ongoing support to 7-8 G.A.P. accompaniers who act as human rights monitors in communities throughout Guatemala that are at risk of threats and violence for their efforts to seek justice for past atrocities. She represents NISGUA within the umbrella group of international accompaniment organizations in Guatemala with which NISGUA works (ACOGUATE/CAIG). Email: aconisgua@nisgua.org

 
Guatemala Accompaniment Coordinator

The Guatemala Accompaniment Coordinator is responsible for training and supervising NISGUA’s short-term emergency accompaniers who work with individuals and groups that have experienced acts of intimidation and threats due to their work. She maintains relations with Guatemalan grassroots organizations and NGOs related to the genocide legal cases, responds to human rights emergencies, and helps to organize the Guatemala side of NISGUA’s annual speaking tours and delegations. She also oversees NISGUA’s Guatemala City office and house logistics, as both short-term and long-term accompaniers reside in NISGUA’s central house/office space during their stays in Guatemala City.  Email: acocp@nisgua.org

 
NISGUA Liaison to Affected Communities

The Liaison to Affected Communities works in coordination with Guatemalan communities affected by large-scale mega-projects such as mines and dams.  She works with the communities in San Marcos who have been adversely affected by the Goldcorp Marlin mine and with communities in the Ixcán that are opposing the construction of the Xalalá hydro-electric dam.  The Guatemala-based Liaison helps coordinate NISGUA’s strategies with those happening on the ground, provides information and analysis between the communities and NISGUA’s staff and network in the U.S., and helps coordinate tours and delegations related to mega-projects in Guatemala.  She also meets regularly with national-level coalitions working to stop mining and other mega-projects in Guatemala. Communications Coordinator

The Communications Coordinator is responsible for NISGUA's written and web-based publications; she creates and distributes information and analysis on the current situation in Guatemala, including urgent actions, news updates, and in-depth studies. She manages NISGUA’s webpage and list-servs and also handles accounting for the Guatemala office.  This position is ¾ time (30 hours/week). Email: communications@nisgua.org

Executive Director

The Executive Director is responsible for managing all aspects of NISGUA’s program and organizational functioning, which include developing, implementing, and supervising program and policy work as directed by the Board; fundraising and fiscal management; strategic leadership; network development; the coordination of NISGUA’s coalition activities; primary public representation of the organization; and staffing. The Executive Director develops and helps carry out campaigns, is the program lead for NISGUA’s U.S.-based policy advocacy work, and supervises NISGUA’s staff in Oakland, CA and Guatemala City. G.A.P. Coordinator

Through the Guatemala Accompaniment Project (G.A.P.), the G.A.P. Coordinator recruits, selects, and provides extensive training to human rights monitors and serves as the primary liaison with U.S. Sponsoring Communities who maintain relationships with at risk Guatemalan communities.  She supports NISGUA’s speakers tours to the U.S. and helps facilitates information about the genocide cases to NISGUA’s grassroots base in the U.S. Email: gap@nisgua.org

 
Grassroots Liaison

The Grassroots Liaison is responsible for managing NISGUA’s individual donor base and increasing network membership and grassroots activist participation.  She orchestrates the logistics and follow up for 4-5 informational and fundraising mailings per year, maintains NISGUA’s database, shares activist tools with the grassroots base, provides logistical assistance for events such as delegations and tours, and manages NISGUA’s e-lists and year-end calendar sales. Through ongoing contact with the network, the Grassroots Liaison identifies and supports strategies to increase network involvement (both financial giving and activism).  This is currently a ¾ time position. Finance Manager

The Finance Manager is responsible for NISGUA’s bookkeeping and accounting, bill pay, gifts processing, and provides general office support.  She works with the Executive Director to provide quarterly financial analysis to the Board, ongoing cash-flow projections and other financial forecasting.  This position is 10 hours a week. Development Manager 

The Development Manager identifies and cultivates foundations and new individuals who may be interested in financially supporting NISGUA’s work.  She writes grant proposals and reports, coordinates NISGUA’s foundation deadlines calendar, provides strategic research, advises the Executive Director about fundraising priorities and opportunities, and works with the Executive Director and program staff to match NISGUA’s programs with new sources of funding.  This position is 12 hours a week.
