> Guatemala has the most unequal land distribution in the Western Hemisphere, with large landholders who comprise only 2% of the population possessing 70% of the productive lands.

> Attacks against human rights defenders in Guatemala increased between 2004 and 2005. In 2005, El Movimiento Nacional por los Derechos Humanos documented 224 attacks against human rights defenders, in comparison with 122 attacks in 2004.

> On March 30, 2006, the 11th anniversary of the signing of the indigenous accord, tens of thousands of workers, farmers and indigenous people marched in Guatemala City to demand the strengthening of indigenous rights, restriction of open pit mining licenses, and funds for the Ministry of Agriculture to purchase land for redistribution.

NISGUA is a national activist organization that supports the Guatemalan people in their struggle for justice, human rights, and self-determination. NISGUA provides human rights monitoring for grassroots movements; works to reorient U.S. policy toward Guatemala; builds a broad U.S. movement for a democratic Guatemala based on socioeconomic justice; and educates the U.S. public about the current situation in Guatemala.

NISGUA welcomes unpaid interns to work out of our U.S. office and provides an opportunity for them to work on substantive projects within a number of different program areas, including legislative work, publication of activist materials, campaign and program development, and research on key human rights topics. Other tasks may include written translation, event or delegation organizing, monitoring of the Guatemalan press, and updating activist materials.

The minimum internship length is three months, and interns are asked to commit a minimum of 20 hours per week, preferably in the morning and early afternoons. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis.

Qualifications: Interest in Guatemala, commitment to social change, ability to work independently and with others. Strong writing and oral communication skills. Strong working knowledge of Spanish.
